Tulum for Student Travelers

Thursday March 23, 2006
Never heard of it? That's why you might like it. Spring break in Mexico resorts like Cancun is jammmed; the tiny town of Tulum, Mexico, is two hours south and light years from crazy Cancun. The Riviera Maya is the area of Mexico stretching down the Caribbean coast from south of Cancun to roughly Tulum; Tulum is about 30-45 minutes south of gringo playground Playa del Carmen on the Riviera Maya.

Tulum is everything wonderful about the Mexican Caribbean. Tulum's getting discovered, but the sugar white beaches are still sweetly quiet, the ocean is as clear as gin and you can get a big meal by the bus station for two bucks. And you can sleep in Tulum for pesos. Tulum has an eclectic visitor population of adventurous backpackers and indie Euro travelers -- you should join them.
