With a whopping 21 percent of student travelers carrying laptops these days (according to a Hostelworld survey), a recent rallying cry heard 'round the well beaten paths and less traveled roads is, "Where's the wifi?" Travelers can easily pay too much for a few minutes of wifi when longing to check email (24 euros per hour for this writer in Lucerne recently), and hostels, like business hotels, aren't exactly hopping on the free-wifi-as-amenity wagon yet. If you've spent frustrating hours on fruitless free wifi searches abroad, check out a list of ten European hostels with free wifi in top student travel spots like Rome, Prague and Paris.
What is wifi? And who cares?
"Wifi" means "wireless fidelity" and is a way of networking computers without wires. Travelers care what wifi is because with wifi, travelers lugging laptops can log on to the internet anywhere without needing a phone line and cable or, with free wifi, an account. Wifi hotspots are places where you can find wifi, free or paid. Internet cafes are likely wifi hotspots, and many airports, hotels and bars have wifi hotspots.
