September officially "National Passport Month"
Tuesday July 18, 2006
In June, the US House unanimously approved a measure introduced by Democratic Congresswoman Barbara Lee and 56 co-sponsors to establish September as National Passport Month, creating a time earmarked to educate the public about travel opportunities available to passport holders. Travel publisher Lonely Planet, which presented Lee in April with more than 5,000 petition signatures, including supporters like Hostelworld.com and National Geographic Traveler, spearheaded the effort.
The campaign's focus has shifted to the White House in hopes the administration will issue a proclamation; what that means remains to be seen, but it's all a good reminder to get a passport and get traveling.
