RyanAir Airs Airport Discontent
Thursday August 31, 2006
British Air was the first to make some serious noise about delays at London's Heathrow airport after alleged terrorist incidents two weeks ago initially disrupted passenger flow via extreme UK airport security checks and the banning of carry on baggage; budget Euro carrier, Ryanair, is the latest to voice displeasure over the UK's seriously strict security measures.
Michael O'Leary, CEO of the UK's largest passenger airline, posted strong words RyanAir's website aimed at encouraging the Brit government to lighten up: "The way to defeat terrorism is for the Government to show leadership and return air travel in Britain to normal... Surely common sense would suggest that if the safety and security of British citizens is under threat, why has the Government not banned luggage, liquids and gels on the London Underground or on the Eurotunnel?"
I flew twice last week, and the whole security scene is indeed difficult; in London, it sounds like a royal pain. if you're hopping the pond by air soon, take note of current US and UK airport security rules and plan accordingly.
