Party Time in Puerto Vallarta

Friday September 1, 2006
Here in Puerto Vallarta, the beat went on last night as Hurricane John powered past us en route to Baja Sur. The Category 3 storm favored us with fierce humidity and some epic surf, but just a bit of wind and rain -- all told, I have fared far worse far inland from a Florida storm. If a hurricane must be waited out on Mexico's Pacific Coast, protected Puerto Vallarta on beauty Banderas Bay is a good place to do it.

I spent Wednesday night not exactly hunkered down at Senor Frog's (left), where bikini models (whom the event I'm attending are all about) took over the stage for a hot time in the old town part of PV, Viejo Vallarta, which is also home to awesome breakfast joint Freddy Tucan's (check out the chilequiles).

John churned off shore last night while the Ujena Bikini Week gang hit Hilo, a sweet club on the malecon (street paralleling the beach in downtown Puerto Vallarta) for a sponsor party. Over on the beach side of the malecon, roasted corn on the cob and cold bebidas can be had from street vendors and just up the street sits the wannabe Zoo, which keeps chugging until six a.m.

Tonight, the clubbing continues at classy Christine's and tomorrow the action returns to club Collage, where cool circus stuff (left) took the floor before trademark Foam Night on Tuesday. Enough is happening that visitors might never guess this is the economico off season. You should put this event on your list for next Labor Day -- Puerto Vallarta's beautiful and it's relatively inexpensive to be here at this time of year, and the clubs just keep on going. You can wear yourself out by day playing golf or running a minithon (sponsored events), lolling within rolling distance of beachfront bars, or seeing some sights (about which I plan to tell you -- stay tuned). Hasta luego.
