Mexico Independence Day (and Travel Notes)
Saturday September 16, 2006
Just in time for Mexico's September 16 Independence Day, the US government issued a travel public announcement on September 15 for the country of Mexico -- a travel public announcement is a step down from a warning, but does mean the US powers that be think you should take care if traveling there. Recent violence in the state of Guerrero and city of Oaxaca and ongoing trouble in the city of Nuevo Laredo are cited. Among other advice given, the government thinks you should stick to toll, or cuota, roads if driving in Mexico.
Mexico's Independence Day is a terrific celebration across Mexico and in the US -- if you're not in Mexico at the moment, check your newspaper for local happenings and go eat some street food (churros!), listen to mariachis, and start dreaming of that trip to Mexico. And if you are in Mexico, just exercise the same travel care as always and enjoy. (For what it's worth, we were perfectly safe, as always, in Baja and Jalisco -- Guadalajara and Puerto Vallarta -- two weeks ago.)
