Passports Deadline for Mexico, Canada Travel Moved Again
Sunday November 26, 2006
The latest of several deadlines set by the US Department of State by which all travelers must present passports to return to the US after air travel to Mexico, Canada, the Caribbean, Bermuda and Panama has been changed again. The new deadline for requiring passport possession when entering the US by air is January 23, 2007. The actual development of the new passport "substitute," the PASS card, was also announced in November and the PASS, which will be cheaper than a passport, may be ready when rules on passports and Canada / Mexico land and sea travel also change sometime between January 1, 2008 and June, 2009, although passport deadlines may change yet again. Currently, US citizens may cross borders to and from the affected countries while bearing only a government-issued ID (like a driver's license) and proof of citizenship (like a US birth certificate). US territories are exempted from the new passport rules.
Regardless of whether passport rules may change again, apply for a passport right now as getting a passport can take up to two months in normal circumstances, and the coming passport application stampede won't be normal. Learn more about getting a US passport:
