Israel: Warning for Goa on New Year's
Friday December 29, 2006
The Washington Times reports that some backpackers are abandoning plans for New Year raves on popular backpacker beaches in Goa, India following the Israeli government's warning of a potential al Qaeda terrorist attack over the holiday in the longtime hippie hang. Apparently, the government fears a repeat of an Egyptian beach attack in April or the Bali bombings of 2002; the Indian government is apparently stepping up Goa security. One report about the spring Dahab bombings described beachgoers as "Foreign women in bikinis drinking beer on the beach with dreadlocked Egyptian men..." and surmised that "The fact Dahab is considered relatively licentious may be one of the reasons it was targeted."
Australia’s Department of Foreign Affairs has issued an advisory regarding holiday travel to Inonesia and the US government has had a travel warning in place since November 2005; both cite potential terrorist activity. Have a care, travelers.
