Passports: House Says "Delay," DHS Says "No Way"
Monday May 14, 2007
The US House recently passed a measure meant to push back the date on which passports will be required for land crossings of Canadian or Mexican borders into the US until 2009 or beyond, but Department of Homeland Security
officials have responded that they will be ready for new passport requirements by January 2008.
But will the Department of State? They certainly weren't ready for the very predictable onslaught of applications prior this year, when passport rules changed to require the documents from any citizens, including those from the US, flying into the US from any country. Issuance of passports has been hugely delayed by the crush of people applying 1.
Should you question whether passports, which were not needed for travel between Mexico, Canada, the Caribbean, Bermuda and Panama for years, are needed now -- well, Department of Homeland Security official Russ Knocke may have this to say to you, as he apparently did to NY Democratic Senator Charles Schumer, "You can either be for security or against security."
Me, I'm for travel. Get a passport application going now and you'll be ready for travel regardless of deadline changes -- passports are good for 10 years if you're over 18, and lines are going to be verrry long by year end.
