Lithium Batteries and Baggage

Tuesday January 1, 2008
New regulations concerning lithium batteries and airline baggage are in effect as of January 1, 2008 -- but they may not affect you too much and are probably more reasonable than many of the hassle-ful things we've been required to do to fly in, to or from many places over the last few years. The ban on lithium batteries in checked baggage involves size, packaging, type (metal vs. ion), lithium content and more -- the batteries in your camera and laptop are doubtless just fine on all counts. Pack spare batteries in your carry on baggage and all will probably be well. The deal, basically:

  • You may not pack loose lithium batteries in your checked baggage
  • You may pack spare lithium batteries in carry-on baggage
  • You may not bring gigundo lithium metal batteries, period (which you're unlikely to even own, anyway)
