Good question. No one really knows exactly when the new passport deadline
is (the date by which US citizens must have a passport to return to the United States by land or sea from Mexico and Canada), but it is
definitely sometime in summer 2008.
The passport deadline is not
in January, 2008 (this month), as was widely misreported (the DHS was vainly holding out hope that January would be the deadline, but it's been clear for some time that was a ludicrous hope).
When the new passport deadline is finally set, likely this summer, the US gov will give 60 days notice, so no need to panic just yet if you're driving to Mexico for spring break
-- you'll likely still be able to get to Mexico without a passport
