Spring Break Planning: Amtrak Routes

Friday March 14, 2008
A US trip is a hot option for many this spring break season, especially those without passports and students headed out on alternative spring breaks (not to mention those without a trust fund for gas): an Amtrak ticket may get you just where you want to go (and at a student discount to boot). Amtrak takes you into Miami, San Diego (shuttle it to Rosarito Beach, Mexico, without a passport -- hint: click around the Amtrak map to avoid buses on the California coast), or right into downtown New Orleans from the Northeast US or Chicago.

And if a spring break ski trip is on your agenda, Amtrak will drop you practically at your doorstep in Winter Park, Colorado or down the road from Aspen in Glenwood Springs. Add the 15% student discount on Amtrak and the fact that packing isn't the infernal hassle it's become for US air, and it could all work.

Start checking it out by first ensuring Amtrak's trains go where you want to get with an Amtrak routes map, a trick trip atlas online.

Look into riding the US rails with an Amtrak photos gallery, too:
