Completely useful post on travel blog Gadling today: "Six Alternative Uses for a Digital Camera" details clever ways to make your digital camera really work for you on the road, like map storage and a few creative communication ideas... for instance, showing a pic of streetpost signs near your hostel to a cabbie, or taking along a pic of what you're looking for to a store. This last one could replace the humorous-to-all pantomime and international pictionary drawings I usually end up utilizing in my efforts to communicate about what I seek when there is no word for "thing that looks like that other thing on the shelf there, but sort of hexagonal, or maybe square, and maybe red" in my phrasebook.
I came up with a use for my digital camera/cell phone camera a few years ago that I hope I never have to utilize again: take a picture of your bag and, if your luggage gets lost, show it to the lost luggage people at the airline, train station, etc. Or (argh) the police. Check out the Gadling post for some other inspiration on more creative camera communication options.
