A recent story in the Boston Globe points us to something interest-piquing: Budget Backpacker, a
group travel company catering to traveler hopefuls who lack European experience, with the basic concept being the same as it is with any group travel -- those who've been there guide those who haven't. Two big differences between this and your parents' group travel: these are backpackers, and the trips are accordingly meant for independent-minded travelers: tour leaders get you from city to city and into the best hostel around, and you're then on your own for fun and food -- just as you would be were you toting a backpack on your own, except someone else does the logistical planning. $1900 for seven nights with hostels and all travel to 3-4 cities but without meals for an upcoming Ireland trip.
