We admire famously frugal Andy the Hobo Traveler's money-saving skills hugely -- in fact, we aspire to his economical example whenever we travel (we never manage it). Our interest is therefore piqued when Andy recommends spending, and in
this case, he's absolutely right: buying a cab ride to and from the train station or airport to the hostel is a smart use of some cents. Even if that's a short trek, a traveler's toting all his/her possessions during it while presenting easy prey to pickpockets; Andy calls such a cab ride "travel insurance":
