Travel "Insurance" Worth Paying For

Sunday November 30, 2008
We admire famously frugal Andy the Hobo Traveler's money-saving skills hugely -- in fact, we aspire to his economical example whenever we travel (we never manage it). Our interest is therefore piqued when Andy recommends spending, and in this case, he's absolutely right: buying a cab ride to and from the train station or airport to the hostel is a smart use of some cents. Even if that's a short trek, a traveler's toting all his/her possessions during it while presenting easy prey to pickpockets; Andy calls such a cab ride "travel insurance":

  • From "Travel Insurance Paid in a Taxi": "If any way possible, if the fee is under 15 US, I take a taxi, I consider it a travel insurance payment, plus a damn good way to make the first day in a country, the best possible first impression, and help the country get off to a good start."

Another good point: humping all one's gear umpteen blocks can be a hard haul; a cab sure makes it easier to get to the hostel, get settled, and get going. All good advice from an expert who's often worth heeding.
