Burning Man is Summer's Hottest Road Trip

By , About.com GuideAugust 19, 2009

Follow me on:

Burning Man, an August 31-September 7 happening in the Nevada desert, is perhaps best described in words from the Burning Man site: "Burning Man is an annual experiment in temporary community dedicated to radical self-expression and radical self-reliance." It's quite a scene and one worth seeing and doing if you're so inclined, and it's one heck of an excuse for a last summer road trip before you put the cooler away for another year. Camping is the thing and Burning Man happens about 130 miles from Reno, so grab some gear before you go. Burning Man ride share boards exist to find burning-bound folks for sharing gas.

If you go:

Hi Kathleen,
Just wanted to let you know about an additional burning man resource – we set up some wiki pages about Burning Man at TownMe – you can check it out at http://www.townme.com/black-rock-city-nv.

Pages includes places to do yoga, get massages, etc. at Burning Man.

We also compare US Census to Burning Man demographics to show that if Burning Man was a permanent city, it would be tied for #1 most educated city with Ann Arbor and #16th richest city in the US (With San Jose).

Stats are here:

Hope you find it interesting!

Kathleen,

Hmm. I disagree. Road trips are more about the trip than the destination, and although I admit that part of the fun is the journey to the desert, Burning Man is not what I would call a good “road trip” destination.

But instead of splitting hairs let me point out that you neglect to mention that there are NO services out there and NOTHING to purchase. It’s not just about “grabbing some gear”. There’s serious preparation needed and you pass this one off like it’s a good spontaneous option for a lark.

Any Frat kids who show up there with a pup tent, Mardi Gras beads and a forty of Pabst are going to be sorely disappointed, especially when they find there’s no burrito cart in sight.

It’s not Lollapalooza. Geez.

By the way, cross country ride sharing is great idea even outside of burning man. A great site for ride sharing is Lift Surfer. Craigslist is another resource thats good for finding ride sharers.
