Backpack Gorp & Soup

Don't want to spend the bucks on fancy backpacking food like "Southwestern Smoked Salmon Pasta" (from the Backpacker's Pantry)? You can always retrench with ramen noodles - watch the grocery store for specials (most recently found a case of 12 for $2.00). Doesn't matter if the dried noodles get smushed - they come in a hard little pack, tightly bound together, and it's a challenge to turn them to dust even if you sit on the package.

Gorp, also called trail mix, is an old staple of backpacker cuisine. Make your own:

  • 1 part M&M's
  • 1 part fave nuts
  • 1/2 part raisins
  • 1/2 part fave dried fruit bits
  • 1/2 part fave seeds - sunflower or pumpkin, for instance

Mix well and store in a zippered bag. The beauty of Gorp is that you can put together most of these ingredients around the globe.

Fantastic Foods make delicious organic soup cups in flavors like Jumpin' Black Bean and Cha Cha Chili. The cardboard cups are a little bulky and there's a danger of piercing the paper lid, spilling the contents in your pack - but they're worth carrying if a hot cup of truly good soup soothes your soul. When you check that area of the grocery store, you'll find dried soup, bean and pasta cups from several companies.

And don't forget salt and pepper. Get a travel sized version here.

    Bon appetit!
