While part of the fun in planning a camping road trip is poring over your tattered U.S. atlas, looking for likely federal camping sites, you'll love this, too: find US federal campgrounds online and get details, campground photos and maps for federal campgrounds managed by the National Forest and Park Services, Bureau of Land Management (BLM), the Army Corps of Engineers and the Bureau of Reclamation. (Yep, the Bureau of Reclamation has control, in partnership with the National Forest Service, of some awesome places - take a peek.)

How to Find Federal Campgrounds Online

Find federally managed campgrounds online by state using this great site. Click on a state in the online campground map and you'll be presented with all federally managed campgrounds. Click on a campground and get a short but detail-packed description, a photo and a map. Scroll down the page and, under "Additional Information", click on the campground's website and get all kinds of information about the area, such as where you can ride your mountain bike, avalanche info if applicable, where the ATV and hiking trails are and everything else enquiring camping minds might want to know.

Print out the info on your intended destination(s) - but carry your tattered atlas, too. Both are invaluable travel tools for a camper.
