Tarps
Ah, tarps. Rollable, stuffable precious camping item. If you haven't a tent, a tarp will protect you and your sleeping bag (to some degree) from the weather. If you have a tent, you're in backpacker's comfort heaven when you string a tarp over your campsite home away from home. Use a tarp to protect your cookstove from precipitation or relax under it with a book during the heat of the day. And in survival situations, you can wrap yourself in your sleeping bag and your sleeping bag in a tarp until help arrives.
MSR Trekker Wing - roomy, but needs trekking poles or some other upright "sticks" for best setup; can also be tied to overhead objects with guy cords. About $190.00. (Zowsers.)
Hennessy Hammocks - an all around camping luxury. They're tarps, they're hammocks, they're ground covers - they're the solution. String one over your tent or sleeping bag for weather protection or sleep in it for ultimate comfort, swinging lightly between trees (built-in mosquito netting is a special bonus). Prices vary depending on model.
Stay dry, safe, cool or comfy with a tarp. Worth the investment if you have the bucks.
The Bottom Line
Remember - shelter first, water second, food last. Travel safely!
