Get Your Car in Shape for Summer Road Trips

By Kathleen Crislip, About.com

Hitting the highway for a road trip? Ensure that your car is in shape before you leave by following a few simple tips.

Ready, Set...

NADAguides.com - experts offer easy road trip tip auto preparation. Not inclined toward do-it-yourself car care? Take this list (check the website for full instructions) to your favorite auto garage. The mechanics there may have suggestions, as well.

  • Tire test
  • Got fluids?
  • Motor skills
  • Component check 101
  • Safety first - stock an emergency travel kit (screwdrivers, wrenches, pliers, emergency flares, flashlight, jumper cables, tire iron, jack and radiator fluid). And don't forget a spare tire!

"Not only are these inspection and safety tips important in preparing you for a summer road trip, they're a vital part of regular car care no matter the season," says Mark Perleberg, lead auto expert at NADAguides.com. "Get in the habit of inspecting your car, or having a certified mechanic at your local car dealership inspect your car, on a regular basis. An ounce of car care prevention can help you avoid costly and unnecessary repairs in the future." Sound advice.
