Heading abroad to study or play and need to stay connected with family, friends and professors? It's easy and surprisingly inexpensive in the age of wireless electronics. Here's how to phone home whether you're in the Amazon or downtown Amsterdam.

Internet

Internet Cafes

Wireless or cyber cafes are everywhere these days. Great place to grab a latte, rest your tired tootsies and meet fellow travelers while you check your email.

  • If you're the organized type, check out a fairly comprehensive list of internet cafes so you'll know where to go for what you want.

  • See a sample from the list at Fat Tire Bike Tours in Paris (yep, has internet) -- you're taken to the outfit's site and shown a list of services (email, printing, faxing, computer availability and prices, etc.).

Set up a free Yahoo or Hotmail email account, hand out your address and use the email service's address book feature to file the addresses you need before you leave home and you can communicate from Costa Rica (tuck your user name and password into your wallet or write it in your address book). If you’re having a down day in Dublin, nothing beats opening an email from Mom asking if you need money!

You can also use many cyber cafes for phone calls; can be easier than dealing with operators who don't speak your lingo, and cafe employees do the dialing.
