Maps of Asian Countries and Cities

By Kathleen Crislip, About.com

Student planning to travel to Asia? You'll be needing maps even if you happen to speak any of the many languages and dialects. Maneuver to some online maps and print them out before you leave home.

Start with About Guide to Asia for Visitors Greg Cruey's excellent "Essential Maps Page" - perhaps the most detailed site on the net for the following areas - far more here than map links. Greg details the info the maps will provide (hotels, dive spots, temples and all the jazz) on each destination's main page, as well as great links: a Bali blog, a map of Manila's transit system and a searchable database of Bangkok street addresses are just a few examples:

  • Bali
  • Bangkok
  • Beijing
  • Cebu
  • Delhi
  • Dubai
  • Istanbul
  • Manila
  • Singapore

Next, head for maps-org - great page with clickable maps:

  • Cambodia
  • China
  • India
  • Indonesia
  • Laos
  • Malaysia
  • Maldives
  • Myanmar
  • Nepal
  • Philippines
  • Sri Lanka
  • Thailand
  • Vietnam

Click into each destination to see major areas (Phnom Penh, Siem Reap and Sihanoukville in Cambodia, for instance) and click deeper into those destinations to see area maps.

Lastly, Fodor's has several Asian city guides online. Most destinations are covered above, but maps are slightly different and more detailed in some cases. Each city site provides an overview and information on hotels, restaurants, nightlife, shopping and rituals and religion. Fodor's comprehensive travel tips include how to get there and get around and basic info like bank hours, where to find medical help and embassy locations. Look for the maps in the left hand column under the travel information.

    Enjoy exotic Asia!
