Gudalajara's Nueve Esquinas, or Nine Corners, neighborhood is the home of Hostel de Maria, Guadlajara's best budget lodging, and some good dining choices. Nightlife can be had, too.

Look for Cafe Bernard one block from the hostel, but it is moving to a new home; in the meantime, the expat French owner serves up dishes like a vinegary rice salad (above), chops with herbed butter and pasta, dessert and a drink for five bucks. Delish. Check out the Birrieria las Nueve Esquinas for some terrific lamb, too.
