Overbooked Flights may Mean Free Flights

By Kathleen Crislip, About.com

Student travellers are always looking to save or earn a buck; here's a new one.

Getting "bumped" from an overbooked flight means airline personnel will have to ask some passengers to volunteer to give up their seats. If you're willing to be "bumped" and wait for a later flight, you may wind up with free flight vouchers or discount coupons, meals or a hotel room where you can wait for the next flight in comfort. Negotiating what you'll receive in return for volunteering to be bumped is a fine art and placing yourself in a position to give up your seat takes some forethought.

About Guide to Budget Travel Mark Kahler lays it out for you. A student traveler in no particular hurry to travel can pick up some (literally) valuable tips from Mark, who was invited to discuss bumping options on Fox News Weekend. Guaranteed expert advice.

I am one of those who never knows the direction of my journey until I have almost arrived. --Anna Louise Strong
