The Bottom Line

YHA's Railway Square hostel is the place for quiet nights in central Sydney. The hostel is modern, though partially in a historic building, the folks are friendly and the joint is secure, including rooms on the ground level. Sydney Central train station is next door, meaning Sydney's bar scene (take the subway) or the Blue Mountains (take the train) become a five minute walk, essentially. If you're looking for calm, clean comfort, this is the place to be in central Sydney. Check out some photos or read more below.

Pros

  • Very central -- near Sydney Central train station
  • Clean and friendly
  • Great kitchen
  • Swimming pool

Cons

  • Expensive wifi when it works

Description

  • Cool converted industrial space (see photo).
  • Pool table and computer bank with internet in common area (see photo).
  • Swimming pool (see photo) -- barbecues happen deckside, too.
  • Travel desk in the lobby see photo -- lots o' walkabout ideas and booking service.
  • Dining and common area (see photo) and big, clean kitchen.
  • Dorms in main building and -- get this -- railroad car arrangements (dorms are housed in railroad cars see photo).
  • Sixty four rooms -- Single / double private rooms available (see photo), two with ensuite baths.
  • Steps from Sydney Central train station (see photo).

Guide Review - YHA Railway Square Hostel - Sydney, Australia

Central Sydney is a good place to base because the train station is nearby -- makes it a snap to see the sights, hop to clubs or get outta town. Of the three hostels we like located near the train station, the YHA (Youth Hostels Australia) Railway Square is the quietest, as well as closest to the train station (though the Wake Up Sydney and YHA Sydney Central hostels are really just steps further).

YHA's Railway Square hostel is in a historic 1904 building adjoining 'Platform Zero' next door to Sydney's Central train station. Cool converted industrial space; some of the dorms are housed in railroad cars (see photo). Lots of amenities, as always in a YHA -- pool table, travel desk, TV room and internet -- you can buy prepaid (and expensive) wifi time codes that also work on the hostel's computer bank, but the wifi does not rock; however, that seems to be an Australia thing -- the whole continent will probably get that whole wifi thing someday.
