When looking for a cheap way to stay in the UK, college dorm rooms for travelers can be a perfect pence and pound stretching procedure: About.com's Guide to UK Travel, Ferne Arfin, says presidents, princes and prime ministers have stayed in UK university dorm rooms for centuries -- be in good company while not draining your wallet, as UK travel is wont to do. However, hostels are the generally preferred lodging for student travelers: is a UK college room a better deal? Let's see:
A private room *with* breakfast at
Oxford, for instance, is completely charming at about £30 per night, and a London university private room with breakfast starts at £35. We paid around £35 for
private London hostel rooms *without* breakfast, so you're ahead of the financial game if choosing a UK university private room. Shared dorms can be had about £20, which is comparable to a dorm in a London hostel (and hostels can be cheaper than pricey London elsewhere in the UK).
A crucial point in this potentially pence-saving proposition: while you may not be saving a bundle on the room, you will be making out like a bandit on the board: food in London is spendy, even if you
cook in a hostel kitchen. And a very important note from us: you
may be missing out on the seriously fun social scene in a hostel if isolated in a college dorm; if some solitude far from the bar is just what you want, though, then this may be just the ticket.
