You can hop off the train during an Amtrak trip for leg-stretching breaks -- these stops are usually announced over the train's PA system during daylight hours (middle of the night stops like the one above have an intimate charm -- just you, an attendant and passenger or two who are still awake, and the great vastness of America). Sometimes you must do the detective work by looking at a train schedule and noting the names of stops. You can get schedules on board from an attendant or, if you're in a sleeper,behind the fold-down table.
