Readers Respond: Seen Bedbugs in a Hostel or Hotel?

Responses: 34

By , About.com Guide

Nobody wants to see bedbugs in a hostel or hotel -- and chances of seeing them in a hostel are actually less likely than seeing them in a hotel. If you've seen bedbugs in a hostel or hotel, though, tell us about it: where were they (like in bed)? Did you tell management and if so, what happened? Discretion, please, on establishment names... if the problem's been rectified, don't want to malign a good place. Oh, and no need to log in or register. Tell Us About It...

Strathcona hotel Edmonton Alberta

Was directed there after all hostels were full. Woke up itching.

Bed Bug Hell

I and my boyfriend are staying in a long term motel in Danville, IL. We have been dealing with bed bugs since September when we moved in, it is now February. How we found out about the bugs is I went to the doctor to find out what the rash everywhere on my body was. The management of the Oak Lawn Inn gave us some spray to kill them. Which controls them for a few days and then they are back again in full force. Since I and my boyfriend moved in here, because we had no other place to go to, My doctor who treats my ptsd and depression, has refused to see me in his office for fear of transmission of the bed bugs to his office, and every time i have gone to the hospital to get treatment for an illness i have been subjected to quarantine measures by the hospital. Is there any way to deal with this motel and its Management legally? I have scars on my arms and legs now from the sores made from the bites I have received? And can steam from a carpet steamer kill bed bugs?

Denial & defense by Court Hostel, London

November 2011 at Court Hostel (or Court Hotel) in Earls Court, London: I disclose its name cuz the so-called male manager’s attitude was denial, defensive and putting the blame back to guests – This must be his tactics to knock off complaints in order to avoid any responsibility – I found from major hostel booking websites afterward that many guests had left negative comments concerning bed bug bites, mice, cockroaches and hygiene problems already! Therefore, he must have known the problems! My 2 nights’ experience: 1st night, being woken up by the very itchy bedbug bites. I went outside to ask for help from the male manager, who said I was the first ever guest who complained about the problem. The 2nd night, I saw a mouse passing inside my room. The manager‘s attitude was even worse – he blamed me for being a trouble-maker, as if bed bugs and mice were brought in or fabricated by me! He asked me for evidence and where the mouse was! Isn’t it a black sheep to London’s hostel industry?!

Hostelsuites Palermo, Buenos Aires

The place seemed really really nice, but the first night I found myself bitten by some sort of bug. I went directly to the reception and they put me in another room. I stayed another night and when I told the manager, they only reimbursed me that night that I was bitter. I found it outrageous, since I got a pretty severe infection in my eye and my arm was all swollen. Apparently they were not bug beds, but they were certainly in my bed. HOwever, the reaction of the hostel was horrible and I will not recommend this place to anyone!

Brossard, Canada Bed Bugs

First time staying at a hotel in Canada, after driving 7+ hours had to find a hotel. All full except for one Econolodge, outside actually looked nice with flowers and lion statues. Settled for a nap-family woke up immediately because we were itchy and scratching all over the place. The pillows had bed bugs-adults and young crawling all over and freshly stained with our blood. Killed some with paper towels and took pictures. Told housekeeper and she moved us. Worse-some stuck to clothes. Told the front desk, the manager there did not even apologize, just said the previous occupants had "no problems" and that she would send someone to "check things out." New room was dirty with crumbs and hairs so we decided to check out next morning and ask for a discount due to the disgusting conditions of the rooms and the bugs. Same woman says she won't give a discount-until we showed her our bites and even then she still only gave a $9 "discount" for a $100 + room price. Callous and careless

A feast for bugs.

My boyfriend and I are staying in an Extended Stay hotel in NJ. Night 1, boyfriend woke with bites all over. He had an allergic reaction to them so they were huge; made his entire hand & arm swell. We told hotel management and they were horrified. They gave us a new room, dried and folded ALL our clothes (to kill any BB's) and we took ourselves and our clean clothes to a new room. Everything else we left behind to be treated. It's taken a few treatments now (when we go to gather our things, we check them very closely and still find one each time). We are mostly moved into our new room, bug free, but have a few things being continuously treated. Management has been great. Boyfriend has been to the doc twice (once for swelling & itching and once because the bites caused an infection in his arm). The hotel filed a claim with their insurance, which is reimbursing us for everything - new luggage, doc, meds, laundry, etc. Manager even got us a $100 am express card for all the trouble.

Bed Bugs in Nauvoo Family Inn Suites

July 2011 - Had a family reunion in Nauvoo, IL. All great until one of the rooms had bed bugs. The management wouldn't even move them to another room for 2 nights, as they said they had no availabilities. They finally moved them on night three from their 3 bedroom 2 bath room to 1 bedroom 1 bath for their family of 8. The hotel attendant said they could stay another night for free since they had missed at least a day of their vacation cleaning and moving due to the bugs. Then the manager blamed them... saying they brought the bugs! told them it was all their fault... charged their credit card for all nights stayed (including the ones in the bug infested room) and told them to get out and called the cops who came and watched them pack and leave. BTW... apparently Quincy Cty is not regulated by the state agencies either! Beware all you large groups!

holiday inn express newport kentucky

Bedbugs were found at the Holiday Inn Express in Newport, Kentuck on July 3rd and 4th, 2012. BEWARE!!!! Manager said they had no prior complaints. Then we found other complaints reported online. From now on, we check for reviews before we make reservations and again before we check in. I got bit! We found an adult bug! No question about what it was.

Wyndham Garden San Diego

BEDBUGS! Beware. This hotel is infested with bedbugs. We stayed there Jun 26-Jul 1 in room 216. We found a bug on Wed and they offered to switch rooms, but being naieve about the little critters, we stayed in the room one more night. But after some research we switched rooms, and spent the entire next day washing our clothing (at the hotels expense). After notifying them about the problem they should have had a step by step action plan on how to handle the situation, but they don't. The hotel manager just looked at us and shrugged, not really knowing what to do. We have since found them in our vehicle we drove home in, they must have been in the room we moved to, so clearly they hitched a ride. We have taken precautions so as not to get them in our home, but we will see... Needless to say the entire vacation was ruined by the ineptness of Wyndham Hotels on how to handle the situation.

Hampton Inn, Stroudsburg, PA

We stayed there at the end of April for a wedding. The first night I woke up with bites on my back, but the 3 other people in room had no bites and thought I was crazy. We now found the bugs and their trails in the couch seems.

Bed Bugs at the Homestead Studio Suites

I took pictures of the actual bed bugs that were crawling over my nice, warm laptop that was sitting on my bed. They ate me alive, and I had a severely allergic reaction that required medical treatment. It was disgusting, itchy and painful, and emotionally traumatic. I filed a claim and did receive some compensation from their insurance company, but the owners tried to claim there weren't any. Glad I took the pictures! The bites went from my back and chest down my sides all the way down my legs. They literally ate me alive. I didn't even want to wear clothes for three weeks because it itched so badly. Beware of any hotels in Chantilly VA! And the best thing you can do before you go to bed is blow the hair dryer on high heat over the bed to see if they come out or leave your hot laptop.

Bed bugs!!!!

Beautiful hotel in dallas, everything perfect until I pulled down the covers! Saw 4 tiny bugs crawling around and was horrified! Called front desk and was moved to suite down the hall, not sure if a suite will make up for the now sleepless night and fear of taking the nasty things home!
